Tell Us About Your Design

The black lace baby doll dress was for a client who was going to a German heavy metal band some where in New York and the client wanted to make an appearance since her filming with them back in Germany. In the beginning she was not sure what she really wanted but after she viewed my portfolio she mentioned that she loves the feeling of the teal & black gown I did, it too was a mixture of lace and sheer. So we continued talking and I heard something very important; She mentioned that she wanted “something very flowy and ethereal” and a light bulb went off in my head. So I looked at some old doodles I did and I thought this would be a good time to introduce this collection. The collection is about mixing only sheer and lace fabrics and showing them in a variety of ways. So I started the first look of the collection, with some changes of course, by draping. It took me about two days to complete minus the time it took me to do the muslin toile. I kept the silhouette and design the same but changed the fabric placement and structure. I did that because I wanted to bring something special to the look after speaking with the client so since she is really petite I designed the dress with emphasis on the torso. I really enjoyed making that dress and I can not wait to start on the other variations!

Who or What Were Your Biggest Inspirations During This Process?

Mi biggest inspiration was the word ethereal and the artist's music.

Which Retailer(s) Would You Most Like to Sell Your Design?

This design wouldn't be sold at a retailer because it was exclusive design for a client.

Judges’ Comments: “There is a lot going on in this dress, but the color keeps some continuity. I like the biased hem and the use of different laces and trims.” – Erin Souder

I am a 29 year old mom and fashion designer based in New Jersey. I've been designing for my label since March 2008 and I enjoy every minute of it. I went to school overseas to study fashion but it was cut short because I capped in school loans but that hasn't deterred me from doing what I love to do. I enjoy listening to all genres of music but I tend to gravitate more to the one where I don't know the language. I love to paint, draw, and play video games!
