Who or What Were Your Biggest Inspirations During This Process?

The inspiration for this design is derived from the Hans Christian Anderson tale "The Emperor's New Suit". The tale is about how two swindlers came into town and tricked the Emperor into wearing nothing by making him believe they were weavers, declaring they had the finest cloth Imagined. “The colors and patterns,” they said, “are not only exceptionally beautiful, but any clothes made of this material possess the wonderful quality of being invisible!”

Lapratto tried to emulates this by providing color and patterns to be worn beautifully, but at the same time wearing so little that it is like you’re wearing nothing at all. The classic story focuses on one’s perception of invisibility. Lapratto brings that to life in the collection by making PVC garments which possess the swindlers quality of being “invisible.” Styling the PVC pieces over other garments tricks the eye and makes us wonder whether there really are clothes there or not.

Judges’ Rating: 4/5

Judges’ Comments: “Pros: I think the design is interesting and would turn heads (in a good way). Cons: The keyhole is a bit large for my taste. I’d like to see a bit more coverage of the breasts. I’d also like to see the legs cut a bit higher. Overall, an interesting design that I think would sell well.” – Cynthia Smoot
