Tell Us About Your Design
This is a full length backless gown with a halter style neckline. It is made of black satin charmeuse with a poly lining. The bodice is basket weaved with multiple strips of tubed fabric hanging in various lengths from the neck line. To achieve the basket weave effect I cut two inch wide strips that were about 20” in length and made tubing. They were then used to create a basket weave style bodice. To create the neckline I left the excess strips attached and added extra ones for fullness. I trimmed the strips to my liking and left the edges exposed so that it tied in with that same detail on the skirt of the gown. The weave is attached to a solid bodice for structure. The bodice can be knotted or tied in a bow behind the neck. The bottom of the dress is layered with random sized pieces of fabric a top of a solid black under skirt. The pieces stretch from side to side purposely not matching at the seams. I wanted it to feel random in a very exact way. The pieces were ripped apart instead of cut so that there would be a raw edge showing. This created an edge that appears to be slightly fringed. The back is fully exposed with the waistline slightly lowered so that it falls on the hips. I used an invisible zipper at the center back of the top of the skirt. There is a very manageable sized train in the back.
Who or What Were Your Biggest Inspirations During This Process?
I would say that my original inspiration came from a black fringe trim that i had left over from a dress that i did years ago. Then it evolved into what you see :)

Judges’ Rating: 3/5
Judges’ Comments: “I think this dress has a lot of potential. I love how overt and fashion-forward the fringe is. It’s edgy, but the bottom of the dress is standard enough to balance it out in total.” – Erin Souder
